Description

This subject provides students with the knowledge and awareness to contribute to the response to, and management of these events. Students will explore specific challenges associated with the management of major incidents and disasters, including ensuring safety, coordinating decontamination and triage, managing complex, CBRNE, communicable disease and non-communicable disease events, as well as understanding the unique management challenges for children.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the responses to, and interactions of, the emergency services and health care sectors in major incidents.
  2. Critique the strategies for managing health service response to major events or disasters.
  3. Identify and describe variations in care and the modification of clinical practice utilised in mass casualty situations.
  4. Implement the Incident Command System and analyse the structured approach to major incidents.
  5. Perform effectively in key health roles in a disaster exercise.

  2. Challenges in major incident management.
  3. Case studies in major incident management.
