Description

This unit introduces students to the principles of design through hands-on, experience-based studio learning. Students will learn how to develop design concepts to convey an idea using techniques of visual communication such as sketches, drawings, and digital renderings, as well as how to communicate design concepts through 3D visualisations that show real-life functions of design concepts. An emphasis on inclusivity and equality in/through design will be a feature of the unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Communicate design ideas and concepts using a variety of media.
  2. Explain the principles and methods of analogue and digital visualisation.
  3. Apply design principles and use them in descriptions of design decisions.
  4. Implement elementary design processes to produce design outcomes.
  5. Apply skills and an understanding of the importance of visual communication within design.

Unit Content

  1. An overview of design principles and frameworks.
  2. Development of concepts and ideas through visualisation techniques across a variety of media.
  3. Exploration of design processes in response to a brief.
  4. Development of individual elements utilised in the creation of a design such as colour, texture, shape, and how these come together to create a unified design.
  5. Freehand sketching and conceptual development.
  6. Communication of design ideas and outcomes.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
