Description

This unit introduces students to a range of techniques, styles and applications involved in the design and construction of vector-based illustrations. In particular the unit focuses on the communicative advantages of drawings and diagrams over photorealism. Students will also examine the process of concept development in the print and digital media industries, where vector based drawing has a wide application.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass unit Design Drawing TDD1101 before being allowed to enrol in the this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded DES4104, DES2104

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop written rationales, informed by current image theory, for design briefs.
  2. Create visual design prototypes appropriate for a range of media and contexts.
  3. Discuss the current trends and developments in picture-based design.
  4. Express information clearly using pictures and visualisations.

Unit Content

  1. Application of pictures for deliberate communication.
  2. Image and picture choice.
  3. Conceptual development of information visualisations.
  4. Visual communication design processes.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit provides students with practical approaches to merging visual communication theories and tactile visualisation techniques, with vector imaging technology and software. Tutorials involve group and individual learning activities focus on exploring complexity through visualisation and its production. Classes will be conducted in an interactive and reflective manner, involving peer reviews and critique sessions that encourage peer learning.
