Description

This unit requires students to write a case study of a design situation.This could be the development of a major design project by another designer, or a historic study of a design company or individual designer.The study will focus on information gathering and detailed descriptions of the subjects.In some cases it will be possible to combine the study with work experience as a participant observer.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate and assess specialist information in design situations.
  2. Investigate, analyse, synthesise, reflect on and report on complex design situations and problems.
  3. Observe and record processes and events using relevant and appropriate research strategies, practices and methods.
  4. Understand economic, social and political constraints that affect design work.
  5. Understand how design works in real life situations and use appropriate methods to successfully work and function as a designer.

Unit Content

  1. Case study as a characterised method to understand workplace context.
  2. Design workplace practice.
  3. Develop reflection and reflexive skills in relevance to design practice.
  4. Management and process of design.
  5. Observation methods.
  6. Questioning methods.
