Description

This unit introduces students to the field of educational technology in secondary schools in Western Australia and encourages the development of a comprehensive knowledge base concerning ICT in a school context. It includes an introduction to the teaching of digital technologies courses in secondary schools. This unit also examines school curricula, appropriate computer applications and the development and assessment of teaching programmes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and evaluate the rationale, aims and content of lower secondary school digital technology courses.
  2. Create lessons to effectively implement technology solutions to data processing problems using applications software.
  3. Discuss and explore current issues relating to the teaching of introductory digital technology including the requirements of hardware, software and courseware.
  4. Plan effective lessons using a range of teaching strategies.
  5. Prepare and apply a teaching programme for a digital technology course based on broad curriculum directives.

Unit Content

  1. Examination of ICT curriculum and issues involving the study of digital technology.
  2. Examination of the concept of digital literacy in schools and society.
  3. Preparation of teaching programmes and lessons.
  4. Resources and equipment required to service courses.
  5. Strategies to teach the use of applications software.
  6. Teaching strategies and evaluation strategies.
