Description

This unit examines the rationale and objectives for Design and Technology teaching and learning in preparation for the initial Secondary School teaching experience. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the aims, content and organisation of curricula in Years 7-10. They will explore the relationship between the outcomes of these curricula and effective pedagogy while acquiring skills in the planning for effective teaching in Design and Technology. This unit also provides an introduction to the philosophy and teaching of Design and Technology through a review of current Australian curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse technology education activities in terms of the Australian and Western Australian Curriculum.
  2. Articulate the nature of Design and Technology education in the Technologies learning area.
  3. Devise teaching and learning activities which utilise complex thinking skills.
  4. Plan and prepare a program of Design and Technology activities for Years 7-10 secondary students including but not limited to assessment items, teaching and learning strategies.
  5. Develop an awareness of the purpose and goals of Design and Technology education through research activities.
  6. Evaluate best practice models of teaching and learning in order to maintain a safe learning environment for school students working in practical classes.

Unit Content

  1. Design and Technology Australian and Western Australian curriculum.
  2. Developing learning programs for Years 7-10 secondary students.
  3. Develop an understanding of Philosophy of technology education.
  4. Develop an understanding of Teaching design and technology.
  5. Develop a teaching and learning program with all necessary information to effectively teach a Year 7-10 secondary students in Design and Technology.
  6. Design and Technology knowledge and content as related to the AITSL National Standards.
  7. Develop an understanding assessments used in Design and Technology education.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS
