Description

This unit provides students with an introduction to the Design process, technical graphic communication through pictorial, orthographic and geometrical constructions. Students will develop an understanding and skills to operate computer aided drafting software as well as develop skills in the use of CAM equipment. A focus is on the use and application of design principles and processes to meet intended design briefs that are common in Technology classrooms. There is also an emphasis on the use of Australian Standard Drawing practices.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This unit is only offered intensively over a 2-week period during the School holidays.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically plan, construct and implement solutions using a variety of pictorial and visual communication media.
  2. Evaluate design briefs using a diversity of CAD and manufacturing skills appropriate for junior secondary technology education.
  3. Create artefacts using advanced manufacturing technology through the use of design techniques and material application.
  4. Analyse design projects from a risk assessment and ethical perspective and develop corresponding project management plans aligned with junior secondary technology education.

Unit Content

  1. Introduction of a design process.
  2. Introduction to the use of Elements and Principles of Design and other criteria required in a design process.
  3. Introduction to Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) software for Windows.
  4. Introduction to geometrical construction.
  5. Introduction to orthogonal drawing.
  6. Introduction to pictorial drawing.
  7. Introduction to printing of CAD drawings.
  8. Introduction to the Australian Standard Drawing practices.
  9. Introduction to the use of a number of CAM machines including but not limited to 3D printers and Laser Cutters.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
