Description

The unit examines current policy and legislation issues in primary education and is designed to enhance the students' membership in and effectiveness as participant in a school team. Matters of school-level decision making, accountability, and system requirements will be studied. As well, the unit will examine and appraise alternative approaches to teaching, schooling, curriculum and learning environments. Different teaching and school philosophies and practices, changes in the structure and nature of education arising from the information technology revolution and issues surrounding home-schooling will be studied.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the school-level decision making process and some current educational policy.
  2. Critique the value and impact of professional learning area associations for teaching.
  3. Evaluate major policy reforms that have impacted on Australian education in the past three decades.
  4. Interpret how some of these policy reforms have re-shaped the work of teachers.
  5. Critically present in an oral form key education policy documents, explaining their impact.
  6. Become familiar with some current educational policy.
  7. Demonstrate professional oral communication and critical thinking skills when presenting key education policy documents and their impacts.

  1. Policy reforms at State and Commonwealth levels.
  2. Education systems in Australia.
  3. Social and cultural change in Australia.
  4. Teachers' work and professionalism.
  5. Professional learning area associations at the state and national levels.
  6. School level change.

Additional Learning Experience Information

An emphasis will be placed on cooperative learning strategies in which students will be required to learn and practise team skills. In addition, the learning outcomes will be facilitated through a variety of activities including lectures, seminars, films/videos, simulations, guest speakers and independent study.
