Description

This unit requires advanced study of instructional design to cater for the needs of students with disabilities. An emphasis will be on selecting effective teaching approaches that cater for students either within the regular classroom or within a special education facility. The main focus of the unit is the identification of the principles of effective instructional design and the evaluation of materials in classrooms against the best practice criteria. Students will also be encouraged to monitor their own understanding and learning strategies against those behaviours described in the research as belonging to 'effective learners'.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse a range of curriculum programs and instructional models in special education.
  2. Critically analyse and evaluate research articles in the field.
  3. Critically review the instructional content and processes outlined in the major curricula in special education.
  4. Critique common educational leadership strategies and practices in the field in light of current evidence-based research.
  5. Design effective teaching interventions for students with disabilities.
  6. Devise collaborative programs to support teachers in designing appropriate instruction.
  7. Differentiate the regular curriculum to meet the individual needs of students.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The teaching processes are delivered in online mode. Assignments are a combination of theory and practice and students will have the opportunity to select topics relevant to their teaching situation or interest.
