Description

This unit is based on a major theme, the development of professional learning communities, and related sub-themes. The major theme and sub-themes are explored through participation in lectures, workshops and seminars and related professional experiences. Completion of a reflective journal and assignments/papers related to the themes consolidate learning during the semester. Students and faculty will consult to design/select a coherent package of seminars to meet the graduate students professional and academic needs.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and reflect on contemporary issues in educational practice and/or educational research.
  2. Analyse presentations, debates and readings related to the seminar topics.
  3. Consider and communicate the implications of topics/findings for educational practice.
  4. Prepare papers/presentations that illustrate active reflection, sound academic writing skills and a consideration of related literature.
  5. Reflect on professional learning communities in specific contexts.

Unit Content

  1. Students will participate in a programme of coordinated lectures and seminars/workshops focussing on contemporary educational issues/topics/themes. The issues/topics/themes will relate to international, national and local research findings.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Active participation in seminars/workshops and reflection on related readings will be supported by the development of professional learning communities. Communication through reflective journals, www, email and discussion groups will support learning. Both internal and external students will have access to a library of seminars on CD to access to better meet their professional and academic needs.
