Description

This unit, for graduate teachers who wish to re-train in the teaching of mathematics from Year 7 to Year 10, will position lower secondary mathematics curricula against some essential upper school content knowledge necessary for good teaching. It thus teaches some necessary mathematics content skills, and also provides a refresher and a consolidation of previously held skills. In this unit, a minimum level of competence in Year 10A mathematics content in the Australian Curriculum strands of Statistics and Probability, and some aspects of Number and Algebra and Measurement and Geometry, will be sought. Students will be encouraged to reach the highest mathematical level of which they are individually capable, in order to best place them for teaching lower secondary mathematics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Solve mathematics problems involving most aspects of the associated and relevant curriculum content in the WACE Mathematics (General) Course of Study Stage 2 units, and some of Stage 3A and 3B units (corresponding to at least Levels 6 to 7 of the Curriculum Framework).
  2. Use the vocabulary and concepts of the Australian Curriculum at at least Year 10A, particularly as this relates to Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

Unit Content

  1. Chance and Data: exploring further statistical data: representation and interpretation.
  2. Chance and Data: focusing on probability: quantification, and representation and interpretation.
  3. Number and its conceptual development through financial mathematics.
  4. Space: exploring the ideas in network theory.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will participate in workshops, discussions, co-operative group work, professional reading, independent study, and use of multi-media technology.

Description

This unit, for graduate teachers who wish to re-train in the teaching of lower secondary mathematics, will position Year 7 to Year 10 secondary mathematics curricula against some essential personal mathematics content knowledge necessary for good teaching of practical mathematics in the areas of statistics and probability. It thus teaches some necessary mathematics content skills, and also provides a refresher and a consolidation of previously held skills. In this unit, the Australian Curriculum strands of Statistics and Probability will be the focus. In order to best prepare pre-service teachers for teaching lower secondary mathematics up to an including Year 10, pedagogical strategies for teaching data and chance concepts will also be examined.

  1. Confidently use and explain the vocabulary and concepts of the Australian Curriculum up to a level of at least Year 10, particularly as these relate to the strand Statistics and Probability.
