Description

This unit extends students' knowledge of engineering materials and manufacturing processes. Students will be introduced to basic manufacturing processes and machine tools. The unit enables students to develop a direct link between manufacturing methods and the mechanical behaviour of materials.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from ENS1115

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded ENM2107

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Classify materials on the basis of their properties and applications.
  2. Construct and interpret statistical QC charts.
  3. Explain the effect of using different machining parameters.
  4. Relate mechanical properties of materials to manufacturing processes.
  5. Utilise manufacturing processes for shaping materials.

Unit Content

  1. Computation of basic parameters for common machining operations.
  2. Machining operations including turning, milling, and drilling.
  3. Manufacturing methods and metal forming processes.
  4. Properties and applications of common engineering materials.
  5. Quality control (statistical QC charts for variables and attributes, process capability).
