Description
This unit provides students with a working knowledge of common practices in the offshore engineering sector. Students examine how the fundamentals of the marine sciences are applied to engineering projects. Offshore risk assessment and management practices are covered and relevant data collection, analysis and reporting skills are developed.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Apply the fundamentals of marine geology, physical oceanography and marine meteorology to a variety of offshore technical problems.
- Describe the equipment, technology and methods that are fundamental to the most common offshore engineering activities.
- Apply scientific knowledge to solve engineering problems by demonstrating sound data collection, analysis and reporting methods.
- Perform a basic risk assessment for an offshore structure and develop a safety case in compliance with current offshore regulations.
Unit Content
- Meteorology: regional weather systems and seasonal variations; global pressure, air mass movement and circulation patterns; prediction of local weather; storms and tropical cyclones.
- Physical Oceanography: ocean structure, physical and chemical properties; global ocean circulations, tides, waves, winds and currents.
- Applied Ocean Science: strategies and equipment for collection, analysis and presentation of metocean data; data sources - measured, remote-sensed, and physically or computer modelled.
- Ocean Renewable Energy: industry challenges; types of technologies for wave, current, tidal and thermal energy extraction; device-behaviour control strategies.
- Marine Geology: geomorphology of the ocean floors, margins and shelves; sedimentation and origins of hydrocarbons and minerals in the oceans; formation and classification of coastal regions.
- Offshore Oil and Gas Industry: global regions of hydrocarbon exploration and production; industry infrastructure for Upstream and Downstream activities.
- Offshore Structures and Operations: types of offshore work vessels; types and features of fixed and floating exploration and production structures; subsea infrastructure including templates, pipelines and risers; moorings systems; offshore intervention methods (Remote Operated Vehicles, diving and surveying operations); offshore lifting operations; technical issues around offshore activities in typical and extreme environmental conditions.
- Offshore Safety: risk assessment and risk management on offshore structures; safety analyses based on plans, layout and equipment using applicable standards and regulations; classification of hazardous and non-hazardous areas; certification and insurance; development of a safety case for an offshore platform.
- Offshore Aquaculture and Commercial Fisheries: key concepts and design considerations; innovative solutions for maximised energy efficiency.
Learning Experience
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
