Description

This unit provides students with a thorough understanding of the application of computers in the product life cycle from initial concept formation to final production. Students learn how to apply modern computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tools to efficiently solve complicated design and manufacturing problems. A commercial 3D modeling system (SolidWorks) and an industrial CNC machine tool are used for laboratory and workshop activities.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 2 units from ENM1102, ENS1115

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) systems to solve engineering design and manufacturing problems.
  2. Demonstrate a degree of competence in the application of modern commercial CAD/CAM systems through hands on experience in the solution of practical problems.
  3. Determine where and how a computer aided engineering system should be used to improve productivity and reduce design and manufacturing lead times.

Unit Content

  1. 3D Curves and surface representations.
  2. CNC programming techniques.
  3. Commercial CAD/CAM systems.
  4. Computer numerical control (CNC) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) systems.
  5. Geometric modeling, solid modeling and feature based modeling.
  6. Hands on exercises using modern CAD/CAM systems.
  7. Introduction to 3D Modeling and integrated CAD/CAM/CAE systems.

  2. CAD model configurations and design tables.
  3. Design for manufacture, including dimensioning and tolerancing.
  4. Geometric modeling, solid modeling and feature based modeling.
  5. Introduction to 3D modeling and integrated CAD/CAM/CAE systems.
  6. Modeling manufacturing drawings.
