Description

This unit introduces the fundamental concepts of mechanics of deformable solids in equilibrium. Students will develop their understanding of the physical performance of solid structural members, which are associated with a variety of structural systems in civil, mechanical, chemical, aeronautical, and biomedical engineering.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 unit from ENS1101 or SCP1111

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Classify the equilibrium state and behaviour of deformable structural members subject to tension, compression, bending and torsion.
  2. Calculate internal actions in determinate structural components, using the equations of equilibrium.
  3. Examine internal actions in determinate structural components under tension, compression, and torsion, by applying compatibility conditions and material constitutive relationships.
  4. Analyse structural members (including composite beams) within a structural design, by estimating the impact of stress and strain on the member subject to tension, compression, torsion, bending and transverse shear.
  5. Determine the basic parameters related to the stability of columns in structural design.

Unit Content

  1. Bending stress in composite beams; selection of economic beam sections.
  2. Shear stress in beams; shear flow in built-up beams.
  3. Basic concepts of deformation, generalised Hookes law, elastic and inelastic deformations.
  4. Relationship between load, shear force and bending moment; shear force and bending moment diagrams.
  5. Torsion, stress concentration; transmission of power.
  6. Stress and strain analysis, and Mohrs circle.
  7. Pure bending and non-uniform bending; flexural stress in doubly symmetric beams.
  8. Equilibrium of deformable bodies; centroids and moments of area.
  9. Unsymmetrical bending; shear-centre concept; design of beams and shafts under combined loading.
  10. Stresses in cylindrical and spherical shells.
  11. Buckling and stability of columns.
  12. Axially loaded members; stress concentration; allowable stress and factor of safety.
