Description

This unit deals with the analysis and design of electronic circuits, concentrating on CMOS digital systems. A range of circuit concepts are covered, including device models, standard circuit forms, and layout. An integral part of this unit is a design task, where students are required to design, simulate, build, test and document a system that meets given functional and performance specifications.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from ENS2256, ENS2456

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded ENS3203, ENS3448

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse a number of useful functional blocks, including single gate, ripple carry structures and other arithmetic blocks.
  2. Apply a systematic process to design digital electronic circuits that meet given functional and performance specifications.
  3. Identify and model the sources of errors and other unwanted phenomena that affect circuit performance.
  4. Use standard circuit forms and the concepts of VHDL modelling to design a range of advanced systems, including functional logic blocks and arithmetic, oscillators, multipliers and logic gates.

Unit Content

  1. Elements of an engineering design process, including the roles played by simulation and prototyping.
  2. Error sources and models.
  3. Frequency limitations.
  4. Multiplier design and applications.
  5. Oscillator design and applications.
  6. Review of MOS device models.
  7. Review of standard circuit forms.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and a major project.
