All students enrolled in professional Honours and Masters engineering degree programs at Edith Cowan University are required to gain at least 12 weeks full-time equivalent practical work experience before they can graduate from their degree. It is expected that this practical experience will enable the student to work under the supervision of professional engineers in office, laboratory or site-based environments, where the student can appreciate a range of industry issues that relate to engineers and engineering practice. This work experience is most likely to be undertaken during the summer or mid-semester breaks where periods of several weeks are available, but it is also acceptable for students to accrue the equivalent of the 12 weeks in non-contiguous blocks, or part-time over longer periods.
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
The practicum experience is usually obtained from one or more periods of work experience taken during the summer breaks, and possibly during the inter-semester break in June/July, or part-time during a semester. Optionally it may also be taken after the completion of the study program if it was not possible to secure a position earlier. Usually a minimum period is taken to be one contiguous week to be accredited towards the practicum requirements.
