Description

This unit covers the fundamentals of drilling engineering. It is a cornerstone unit for the petroleum engineering discipline. Students will learn how to design a well and develop skills for well construction. In addition, students will be exposed to the drilling operation and tools; and become familiar with the techniques in drilling process and well completion.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamentals of well construction and drilling mud control.
  2. Describe drilling operation and equipment including drilling rig components, drilling bits, casing, drilling fluid materials, fluid circulation and pumping systems.
  3. Perform simple casing designs.
  4. Apply the required regulatory and safety requirements for drilling operation.
  5. Apply laboratory procedures for preparation of drilling fluid and cement flurry and the techniques for measurement of their physical and chemical properties.

Unit Content

  1. Fundamentals of drilling engineering including well drilling process, directional and horizontal drilling, well completion, casing design and well cementing.
  2. Drilling operation and equipment including drilling rig components, drilling bits, casing, drilling fluid materials, fluid circulation and pumping systems.
  3. Techniques and materials for drilling mud control and calculation of fluid pressure loss.
  4. Regulations and safety requirements associated with drilling.
  5. American Petroleum Institute (API) standards for drilling fluid and cement preparation and determination of their physical and chemical properties.
  6. Laboratory procedures for mud weight control by adding appropriate additives to drilling fluid.
