Description

Process design is a major part of the chemical engineering profession. In this unit, students will undertake the design of an industrial plant, from conceptual process development to final commissioning. The design will include technology selection, heat and mass balance analysis, progressive development of design diagrams, process safety, and economic analysis. A complete design report is to be produced. This unit synthesises the previous units in the chemical engineering degree to represent the work that a typical engineer undertakes in an engineering company or consultancy.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass units ENS3112 and ENS3113 or alternatively complete units ENS6170 and ENS6171

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Carry out a chemical engineering feasibility study on a given process.
  2. Develop an overall process and assess it in terms of mass and energy flows.
  3. Research and design an individual unit within the constraint of the previously determined mass and energy balances.
  4. Analyse a designed process in terms of considerations such as safety, controllability and economics.
  5. Prepare appropriate documentation for a design project.
  6. Work effectively as a team to undertake the design process.

Unit Content

  1. Feasibility studies including technology selection and process conceptualisation.
  2. Plant description and documentation.
  3. Process unit development and design.
  4. Process control and instrumentation design.
  5. Process safety.
  6. Economic analysis of an industrial plant.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
