Description

This unit provides an introduction to the use, design, construction and evaluation of photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies for the capture and production of energy. The integration of these energy sources into hybrid systems, including their operational efficiency and economic performance is also covered.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed ENS2160 Must have passed ENS2457

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the operational characteristics of photovoltaic cells.
  2. Analyse and predict the operational performance of solar PV systems.
  3. Analyse the full life-cycle economics of a solar PV system.
  4. Describe the operational principles of solar-thermal collectors.
  5. Analyse and design a solar thermal system.
  6. Analyse and estimate the full life-cycle economics of a solar thermal system.

Unit Content

  1. Photovoltaic (PV) technology: components in PV cells; loss mechanisms in solar cells; inverter technologies.
  2. Design, construction and operation of PV systems; integration of PV systems in hybrid power systems and grid connection.
  3. Solar-thermal systems: characteristics of solar radiation; and the design of solar collectors.
  4. Efficiency evaluation of solar collectors; energy storage in solar-thermal systems.
  5. Integration of solar PV and solar- thermal into hybrid systems.
  6. Economic evaluation of solar PV and solar-thermal systems and life analysis.
