Description

This unit provides an introduction to the operating principles and design of systems for energy generation from wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal sources. The unit includes the operational theory, design principles and performance evaluation of these technologies including their life economic performance.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed ENS2160 Must have passed ENS5230

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the operating principles and characteristics of wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal energy generation technologies.
  2. Analyse and design wind turbine, biomass, hydro and geothermal energy generation systems.
  3. Perform an all of life economic analysis of wind turbine, hydro, biomass and geothermal power generation systems.
  4. Assess the environmental impacts of wind turbine, hydro, biomass and geothermal power generation installations.

Unit Content

  1. Characteristics of wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal energy sources and alternatives for energy conversion.
  2. Design, operation and performance evaluation of wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal energy converters; site evaluation and selection; instrumentation for data collection and performance monitoring.
  3. Integration of wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal power systems in hybrid power systems, including grid connection.
  4. Environmental impacts and related standards; economic evaluation of wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal power systems.
