Description

This unit covers the principles of well test analysis and its application in a reservoir study. It is a cornerstone unit of the petroleum engineering discipline. Students will study different testing and sampling procedures and learn how to interpret well test data and determine well/reservoir properties.

Prerequisite Rule

must have passed ENS5566

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamentals of well test analysis and application of well test methods for determination of well and reservoir parameters
  2. Classify methods for drawdown and build-up well test analysis in homogeneous and non-homogeneous oil and gas reservoirs
  3. Interpret well test data and determine well/reservoir properties
  4. Describe the concept of rate transient testing and production data analysis
  5. Apply production rate and pressure transient analysis in reservoir characterisation and well performance prediction

Unit Content

  1. Fundamentals of well test analysis to determine reservoir and well parameters
  2. Well test methods and mathematical models for interpretation of reservoir pressure and production rate data
  3. Classification of well test techniques based on their applications and reservoir conditions
  4. Rate transient testing and production data analysis for determination of reservoir properties
  5. Graphical techniques and decline curve analysis to estimate well/reservoir parameters from well test and production data
  6. Applications of rate and pressure transient well test analysis in determination of reservoir characterisation and well performance prediction

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS
