Description

This unit requires students to apply the engineering principles and skills they have learned in their coursework units to a substantive engineering design or research project. The project is selected in consultation with an academic supervisor, and can be nominated by the supervisor, by the student, or by an industry partner. In this first project unit students will identify and describe the design task or research problem. They will produce a project proposal and risk assessment at the start of the unit and will need to document the work completed towards the development of the project up to the end of the semester in a project development report. The project will be continued and completed in the follow-up unit ENS6127 Master of Engineering Design Project 2.

Students must pass 120 credit points

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Investigate and review information from a range of sources, including a literature review of research, to formulate specific and measurable objectives to effectively implement or evaluate a (substantive) engineering device, system or concept.
  2. Produce a detailed project proposal and plan, including ethical considerations and a risk assessment, in relation to a substantive engineering project.
  3. Investigate, select and integrate advanced engineering principles, methodologies and tools to devise and construct the requirements for an engineering project.
  4. Create a detailed project progress report for an engineering project.
  5. Defend the key aspects, proposed solutions, methods and demonstrate background knowledge through an oral presentation to an engineering audience.

Unit Content

  1. Preparation of an engineering project progress report.
  2. Research oral presentation.
  3. Conceptual development of alternative solutions and/or acquisition of data.
  4. Literature review.
  5. Risk theory, assessment and managment.
  6. Problem analysis.
  7. Critical review and analysis of the solutions/data.
  8. Problem/research question formulation.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
