Description

This unit is the continuation of the unit ENS6126: Master of Engineering Design Project 1 and represents the culmination of studies that demonstrates an ability to undertake and complete a substantive engineering design or research project. At the end of this unit students are required to document an implemented and tested system, or a completed body of research work, in a major design report or thesis. Students are also required to give an oral presentation which provides an overview of their project work. Reports and presentations are reviewed by an assigned examiner and the supervisor.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass ENS6126.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Integrate advanced engineering principles, methodologies and tools to effectively achieve a substantive engineering project.
  2. Demonstrate initiative and independence in completing a project.
  3. Evaluate the outcomes of a project within a detailed project report, prepared for an engineering audience and to a professional standard.
  4. Orally present and defend key aspects and outcomes of a substantive engineering project, including recommendations
  5. Investigate and critique (substantive) information from a range of sources, including a literature review of (broader) research, to create specific and measurable outcomes for an engineering device, system or concept.

  1. Preparation of an engineering report / thesis.
  2. Technical presentation.
  3. Formal design / modelling.
  4. Cost/Benefit Assessment.
  5. Functional analysis / data analysis.
  6. Project implementation, verification and testing.
  7. Planning and implementation of research and/or design tasks.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Self-directed research/project work supported by regular meetings with a project supervisor.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
