Description

This unit provides a systematic study of the theory, research and practice of educational leadership, its background and central features. Students will critically examine and analyse a range of theories, approaches and empirical understandings of leadership. This unit offers students an opportunity to reflect upon their experiences in relation to what constitutes effective leadership in educational settings and to construct their own perspectives of effective leadership. Students will apply their new knowledge to critically examine educational leadership within their own working context.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe and analyse the origins, distinguishing features and effects of various models and theories of educational leadership.
  2. Critically engage with the range of literature on educational leadership to develop specialised knowledge of this field.
  3. Apply theoretical and professional knowledge of educational leadership to a local context and/or professional practice.

Unit Content

  1. Old paradigms of educational leadership: managerial, transactional, transformational and instructional leadership.
  2. An introduction to educational leadership.
  3. Contemporary models of leadership: teacher leadership, system leadership and contingent leadership.
  4. Value based models: leadership for social justice, leadership as service and leadership for learning.
  5. Models that broaden commitment: distributed, collaborative, parallel and shared leadership models.
