Description

Students will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the role of physical activity and exercise on cancer risk, recurrence and survivorship. Contemporary literature is examined to analyse the impact of physical activity and exercise prescription on cancer outcomes. Students will explore the role of exercise in cancer patients and survivors across the cancer continuum, to support improved quality of life and cancer survivorship.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the impact of physical activity and exercise in the context of cancer risk, recurrence and survivorship.
  2. Develop evidence-based exercise plans for patients and survivors across the cancer trajectory.
  3. Communicate the benefits of exercise prescription for improved quality of life and cancer outcomes.

Unit Content

  1. Relationship between physical activity and exercise with cancer risk, recurrence, mortality.
  2. Biological mechanisms underpinning the effect of exercise on cancer.
  3. Prehabilitation.
  4. Exercise during treatment.
  5. Exercise following treatment and long-term survivorship.
  6. Exercise for cancer patients with advanced disease.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

An analysis of contemporary literature is undertaken to expand upon existing knowledge and inform ideas. Students are encouraged to collaborate together with on-line discussions. eLearning materials are available via Blackboard, and students are expected to login and participate in collaborative activities during specific weeks.

GS1 GRADING SCHEMA 1 Used for standard coursework units

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
