Description

In this unit students will develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the principles of exercise assessment and prescription, specifically to address major issues facing the cancer patient or survivor. Assessments of physical fitness and function, body composition, and a range of patient-rated outcomes will be implemented and analysed to formulate exercise prescriptions. Methodologies of exercise prescription will be explored to address changing patient status and fatigue cycles. In addition, aspects of nutritional support to improve patient outcomes will be evaluated.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate exercise assessment results to identify issues facing the cancer patient or survivor.
  2. Design targeted exercise programs for cancer patients and survivors using advanced methodologies of exercise prescription.
  3. Apply appropriate assessment methodologies to evaluate changes in cancer patient or survivor status and symptoms.

  2. Cancer patient and survivor screening for exercise participation.
  3. Exercise test administration and interpretation in cancer patients and survivors.
  4. Patient-related outcomes in exercise oncology.
  5. Exercise prescription and monitoring in cancer patients and survivors.
  6. Cancer patient and survivor status and symptom considerations.
  7. Nutritional considerations.
  8. Treatments regimen considerations.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

Additional Learning Experience Information

e-Learning materials will be available online and students are required to login and complete learning activities during specific weeks. This unit includes interviews from active, exercise oncology researchers and clinicians. Students will gain knowledge in developing exercise prescriptions using online applications. Data analysis and peer review activities are also included.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
