Description

This is a capstone unit that allows students to consolidate their specialised knowledge and skills from across the course, to prescribe and implement targeted exercise medicine for cancer patients. The unit focuses on the application of complex theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the management of cancer. Students will demonstrate advanced technical skills in the use of laboratory equipment to perform health and fitness assessments during the intensive two-week workshops. A key feature of the unit requires students to collaborate with and perform as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Students will have the opportunity to engage and network with industry professionals, clinicians, and allied health professionals.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will be required to participate in a two-week series of workshops and practical experiences on the ECU Joondalup campus.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have completed a minimum of 120 credit points.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply appropriate assessment methodologies to evaluate changes in cancer patient or survivor status and symptoms.
  2. Communicate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to optimise exercise benefits for cancer patients and survivors.
  3. Create evidence-based resources and exercise prescriptions to improve cancer management.
  4. Critically reflect upon personal performance and decision-making to ensure ongoing professional scholarship.

Learning Experience

WIL - Field Experience

Students experience an environment where they observe and/or participate in the application of theoretical knowledge and skills in a professional setting, under the supervision of an expert or professional in the field. Examples include study tours, observation, shadowing, fieldwork, industry tours.

Additional Learning Experience Information

In this unit, students will login to Blackboard and complete a range of self-paced, online learning activities. They are also required to participate in an intensive, two-week practical learning series on the ECU Joondalup campus during specific weeks. During the practical learning series, students will undertake laboratory activities using a range of equipment, engage in small group discussions and participate in team-based activities to demonstrate their professional capabilities.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
