Description

In this unit, students will work on pre-defined learning outcomes in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. This will enable students to develop a broad range of work-related skills that will enhance their graduate capabilities. Students will also be required to take significant responsibility for their own learning outcomes. Host organisations will be secured through the Work Placement Coordinator, or as a result of pre-approved networking and contacts developed by the student. Enrolment into this unit is by application ONLY. Students are required to submit a current Resume, a statement addressing their suitability and may be required to attend an interview. As this unit focuses on the personal and professional development of the individual, no RPL will be considered for this unit.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Summer and Winter School: Students enrolled in summer or winter semester will be required to source their own work placement opportunity.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 180 credit points

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply discipline knowledge to a professional work environment through the planning and implementation of a relevant project.
  2. Evaluate and demonstrate the development of non-technical skills required to succeed in their chosen profession.
  3. Illustrate evidence of professional conduct and ethical behaviour in the workplace.
  4. Synthesise information to produce a coherent and professional skills portfolio.

Unit Content

  1. Professional conduct in the workplace.
  2. Completion of between 100and 150 hours working on a discipline-relevant program of work in an approved work environment.
  3. Collaboration skills and networking for effective business relationships.
  4. Critical thinking skills and analysis applied to workplace scenarios.
  5. Skills and capabilities required to succeed in chosen profession.
  6. Presentation of outcomes achieved from applying disciplinary knowledge on a relevant program of work using a skills portfolio.

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit requires students to complete between 100 and 150 hours of work experience within a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. Some of this work may occur on campus, in a workplace, or wherever appropriate to fulfil the needs of the defined program of work. Students will be required to participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing a work placement, including documentation and risk management compliance. Students may also be required to attend additional on-campus sessions during semester for debriefing and feedback purposes. Students will need to maintain regular email contact and participate in face-to-face and/or telephone meetings with the Unit Coordinator/Lecturer if required. Students will be expected to effectively perform in the workplace to meet the needs of the organisation, as well as complete the units assessment requirements. Students are expected to work autonomously, show initiative and generate ideas relating to their assigned tasks in the workplace. Host supervisors and the unit coordinator will liaise on student progress towards achieving learning outcomes during the placement period.

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.
