Description

In this unit, students will work on pre-defined learning outcomes in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. This will enable students to develop a broad range of work-related skills that will enhance their graduate capabilities. Students will also be required to take significant responsibility for their own learning outcomes. Host organisations will be secured through the Work Placement Coordinator, or as a result of pre-approved networking and contacts developed by the student. Enrolment into this unit is by application ONLY. Students are required to submit a current Resume, a statement addressing their suitability and may be required to attend an interview. As this unit focuses on the personal and professional development of the individual, no RPL will be considered for this unit.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This unit may run in Summer and Winter School: Students enrolled in summer or winter semester will be required to source their own work placement opportunity.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 180 credit points

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply discipline knowledge in a professional setting to enhance work-readiness.
  2. Appraise personal capabilities using feedback and reflection to support performance in a work setting.
  3. Apply knowledge of appropriate professional conduct and ethical behaviour to support professional success.
  4. Produce a professional portfolio that exhibits achievements and identifies opportunities for future development.

Unit Content

  1. Professional conduct in the workplace.
  2. Completion of between 100 and 150 hours working on a discipline-relevant program of work in an approved work environment.
  3. Collaboration skills and networking for effective business relationships.
  4. Critical thinking skills and analysis applied to workplace scenarios.
  5. Skills and capabilities required to succeed in chosen profession.
  6. Presentation of outcomes achieved from applying disciplinary knowledge on a relevant program of work using a skills portfolio.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

ONLINE

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit requires students to complete between 100 and 150 hours of work experience within a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. This work will occur in a workplace, or wherever appropriate to fulfil the needs of the defined program of work. Students are required to participate in an online or on-campus induction on the requirements and procedures for completing a work placement, including documentation and risk management compliance. Students will need to maintain regular email contact and may be asked to participate in face-to-face or telephone meetings with the Unit Coordinator/Lecturer during the semester. Students will be expected to effectively perform in the workplace to meet the needs of the organisation, as well as complete the units assessment requirements. Students are expected to work autonomously, show initiative and generate ideas relating to their assigned tasks in the workplace. Host supervisors and the unit coordinator will liaise on student progress towards achieving learning outcomes during the placement period.

In this unit, students will be given the opportunity to gain work experience aligned to their degree. They will undertake meaningful work in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation that will enable them to apply disciplinary knowledge and skills. The work will enable students to develop a broad range of professional capabilities and will help them become familiar with the work environment. Students will also be required to take significant responsibility for their own learning outcomes. Host organisations will be secured by the School of Business and Law Work Integrated Learning (WIL) team, or can be organised by the students themselves. Any opportunities secured by students will be vetted to ensure they can provide a meaningful learning experience. Enrolment into this unit is by application ONLY and entry requires students to participate in a recruitment and selection process. As this unit focuses on the personal and professional development of the individual, no RPL will be considered for this unit.
