Description

This unit develops students' skills in qualitative research techniques commonly used in business research. With an emphasis on exploratory research techniques, the unit will include the design of instruments and the process of data collection, analysis and interpretation for qualitative analysis.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply transliteracy proficiency in the analysis and evaluation of research results.
  2. Communicate a coherent explanation of an appropriate research design including sampling, measurement and data collection methods.
  3. Demonstrate technical skills to design and execute a pilot study.
  4. Provide interpretations of research results in terms of the overall research question(s).

  1. Coding and theme building.
  2. Critically evaluating research.
  3. Developing research questions.
  4. Focus groups.
  5. Interviewing.
  6. Reporting research.
  7. Research designs and methods.
  8. Research paradigms and the research process.
  9. Secondary data.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On-campus students attend a weekly three hour seminar. Readings and activities are allocated for completion prior to class. The work modules for each lesson will be available on Blackboard. The seminars are used to workshop the central concepts and explore current student dilemmas, to ensure that students are able to implement the research strategies they have studied. Assignments allow students to gain experience in data collection and analysis to prepare them for thesis preparation. The seminars will involve students in presentations of their research studies to experience explaining and defending their chosen research topics.
