This unit examines the concepts and issues relevant to the international business events sector. Business events covered in the unit include meetings (e.g. gatherings, conferences and conventions), exhibitions (e.g. trade shows, public shows and expositions) and incentives (encompassing incentive travel and corporate hospitality events). The unit will focus on the facets involved in the planning, design and delivery of business events. Financial and accounting aspects as well as media and marketing communications will also be examined in detail. The unit will examine how these multiple issues are balanced in the creation and delivery of business events and how the success of this process may be evaluated, largely from the viewpoint of a business event manager.
On completion of this unit students should be able to:

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
This unit is conducted in both on-campus and online modes with a student-centred, technology enhanced learning approach. On-campus students complete weekly online pre-workshop activities and attend weekly seminar sessions on campus. Online students participate in the unit via Blackboard and will require regular online access. They complete the same pre-workshop activities, and an electronic version of the on-campus lecture notes is available, in addition to support materials specifically for students in the online mode. All students are required to complete set readings and participate in activities to discuss, develop and apply the concepts covered in the unit content and readings to learning tasks and assessments. This teaching and learning approach is enhanced through the use of practical industry case studies, where the skills of communicating effectively, critical appraisal and the ability to generate ideas are emphasised. This unit also provides students with industry relevant information, and opportunities for networking, event attendance and volunteer work experience. Students are required to complete individual assessment items which are assessed for quality academic and professional standards, including written communication (structure, language and conventions), critical analysis (depth of thought, development of argument, logical analysis and insight), depth and breadth of coverage, the ability to research effectively using both academic and contemporary sources and industry relevance.
