Description

This unit focuses on cultivating the practical skills required to develop digital video games, drawing from and synthesising the range of skills acquired elsewhere in the Games and Interactivity major, such as 3D modelling, animation, scripting, and user interface/user experience design. Students will produce professionally resolved games in a range of genres and aesthetics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Combine both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the development of digital games.
  2. Compile a game engine for distribution and play.
  3. Develop and follow a developmental timeline for a game project.
  4. Develop programming code to extend the functionality of a game engine, conforming to industry standards.
  5. Discuss and apply techniques for iterative game design and refinement.
  6. Work with industry standard game development tools and assets.

Unit Content

  1. Introduction to Unity 3D editor.
  2. Camera, colliders and coding.
  3. Introduction to game audio.
  4. Overview of game design in practice.
  5. Movement, interaction and instances.
  6. 2D sprites and animation.
  7. GUI and menu system 1.
  8. GUI and menu system 2.
  9. Loading, saving and player preferences.
  10. 3D animation and animation controllers.
  11. Introduction to AI and pathfinding.
  12. Introduction to lighting and particle effects.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
