Description

This unit focuses on cultivating the practical skills required to develop digital games and game levels, using an industry-standard game engine. In particular the unit will review theories of game design, cover issues of game level and environment design, emphasise the workflow for generating and integrating game/media assets (Photoshop and Maya), scripting/coding for games, and compiling a finished executable game or game sequence. This unit is intended to draw from and synthesise the range of skills acquired elsewhere in the Games and Interactive Design major, such as character models, animation, visual design, scripting and storyboarding.

Prerequisite Rule

Student must complete GDI3202 before being allowed to enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop and follow a developmental timeline for a game project.
  2. Design documentation for a video game.
  3. Design the layout for a video game level walkthrough.
  4. Apply the techniques for implementation of video game mechanics to a game level.
  5. Use appropriate strategies to compile a game engine for distribution and play.

Unit Content

  1. Game character design.
  2. Game level design.
  3. Guidelines and constraints of game design.
  4. Game development tools and engines.
  5. Gameplay balancing and testing.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit is designed to expand and foster students’ understanding of game design in a practical context to demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes not only within the unit but also within the Games & Interactive Design major. Tutorials involve a series of instructional class activities to guide students with development of games involving playable levels. Successful completion of the unit assessments will lead to a major piece of polished game which will allow students to showcase their ability and achievement as a game designer.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
