Description

This unit will examine the concept of natural fertility, contraceptive methods that are used to limit fertility, and the effect of age upon fertility and reproduction. The current contribution of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to the worlds population will be reviewed in conjunction with the associated health of children born following ART.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse natural fertility without contraception seen in selected populations, to understand the base fertility rate in humans.
  2. Apply knowledge of reproductive physiology to describe the benefits and limitations of various methods of contraception.
  3. Examine the effect of age on fertility and reproductive processes required to achieve a pregnancy.
  4. Evaluate ART techniques to justify appropriate treatment for a range of underlying disorders.
  5. Evaluate the health of children conceived following ART compared to those conceived naturally.

Unit Content

  1. Natural fertility in populations not practising fertility control.
  2. Methods of contraception.
  3. Effect of age on fertility and reproduction.
  4. Assisted conception techniques.
  5. Health status of children conceived by assisted reproductive technology.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
