Description

This unit investigates the nature and scope of Geography, Economics and Civics and Citizenship within the context of the Australian Curriculum. The unit also examines pedagogical approaches that support effective teaching and learning application of Australian Curriculum Geography and Civics and Citizenship. The unit has a significant focus on developing these understandings to plan for teaching, learning and assessment in the Primary classroom.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature, scope and purpose of the Australian Curriculum Humanities and Social Sciences learning areas of Geography and Civics and Citizenship.
  2. Evaluate, justify and apply effective pedagogical approaches to Australian Curriculum Geography and Civics and Citizenship curricula.
  3. Plan, structure and sequence learning, teaching and assessment plans for Australian Curriculum Geography and Civics and Citizenship curricula that combine effective pedagogy with inquiry processes.

  1. Theoretically underpinned pedagogical approaches to the Australian Curriculum Humanities and Social Sciences learning areas of Geography and Civics and Citizenship.
  2. The content and structure of Australian Curriculum Geography and Civics and Citizenship in primary schools.
  3. Inquiry based learning and teaching in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
  4. Assessment in the Humanities and Social Sciences learning areas of Geography and Civics and Citizenship.
  5. Resources for learning and teaching in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
  6. Integrated learning and teaching plans plans for Australian Curriculum Geography and Civics and Citizenship.
