Description

The unit aims to develop students' understanding of the rationale for teaching History, extend skills to use the relevant syllabus documents and wider research, expand understanding of the inquiry process and knowledge and understanding of practical approaches for teaching History in Primary classrooms. The subject fosters research and inquiry skills to support the development of students' discipline knowledge. Students will increase their content and pedagogical knowledge of the subject as well as develop their professional skills through the practical tasks this unit provides. This unit is designed to develop students' professional skills as they plan inquiry-based teaching and learning materials as well as reflect critically on their own planning and practice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, content and methods of History.
  2. Articulate a rationale for teaching History in primary classrooms.
  3. Demonstrate how to plan, research, structure and sequence learning programs.
  4. Locate and integrate appropriate resources for inquiry-based History learning and teaching.

  1. Module 1 – What is History? A historiographical approach. The Australian Context.
  2. Module 2 – History in the Early Years of Primary School: Experiential/Place-Based Learning.
  3. Module 3 –Upper Primary: History and Civics & Citizenship.
