Description

This unit introduces students to the principles and skills necessary for them to undertake specific tasks in the Occupational Safety and Health industry. Students learn to evaluate illumination, ventilation, heat and cold stress, noise, vibration, chemicals, radiation, fire and explosive hazards in specific occupational contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform calculations that relate to dispersion of gases.
  2. Recognise elements, compounds and polyatomic ions.
  3. Understand the importance of precision and accuracy in data collection.
  4. Understand the scientific principles underlying atoms and particles, thermodynamics and heat, the behaviour of waves, radiation, vibration and noise.
  5. Write and balance chemical equations.

Unit Content

  1. Atomic structure, electron configuration and the periodic table.
  2. Building blocks of matter (elements, compounds, mixtures, solutions, atoms, molecules and ions).
  3. Chemical equations and bonding.
  4. Gasses and their properties in an occupational setting.
  5. Measurement of the physical work environment (heat, noise vibration, radiation).
  6. Scientific principles and methods and the collection of data.
  7. The electromagnetic spectrum, illumination and radiation.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Internal Lecturers, audio visual materials, case studies, small group activities, and on-line resources. External E-learning course work and activities are provided through MyECU and supported by a tutor.
