Description
This unit aims to develop students as critical consumers of published research. Students will gain knowledge of the main steps in the research process and of the range of research strategies and methods utilised by contemporary researchers. Students will also develop information-finding and critical thinking skills that will enable them to apply this research knowledge in order to assess the quality and applicability of research reports. This unit prepares students to utilise research as evidence in their professional practices.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Describe the steps in a formal research process.
- Explain the uses for quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods strategies in researching health topics.
- Demonstrate library research skills to access original research resources.
- Plan a literature review on a health research topic.
- Identify computer software appropriate for use in health research.
- Justify the principles and practices of ethical research, particularly in relation to working with sensitive topics and/or at-risk populations.
- Interpret research data.
- Critically evaluate the scientific merit and applicability of reported research studies.

On Campus students:Lectures, audio visual materials, case studies, small group activities, discussions and online resources. Off Campus students:E-learning, self-study exercises, peer review exercises. This unit engages students in the exploration of contemporary social health issues through the process of learning how to find and appraise research as part of evidence-based decision-making.
