Description

This unit introduces students to the broad area of Environmental Health Management. It examines the organisation and administration of environmental health services. Students are provided with an introductory understanding of environmental law, environmental policy development and environmental health management practices. Specific areas covered include environmental noise assessment, the consequences of housing, occupational impact and recreational pursuits on the environment. Institutional and community rights and responsibilities towards environmental health care will be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Articulate the need for environmental health planning to mitigate disasters.
  2. Assess environmental noise.
  3. Collaborate with other professionals for the delivery of an environmental health service.
  4. Describe the governments role in environmental health.
  5. Discuss the importance of environmental health planning.
  6. Evaluate the systems approach to Environmental Health management.
  7. Examine the association between health and the indoor environment.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Internal Students The unit combines lectures, case studies and discussion to present the learning material and to stimulate critical thinking and problem solving skills in the field of environmental health management. Students will have 3 hours of teaching contact time per week. External Students The unit uses specially prepared notes, readings and tutorials to present the learning material and to stimulate critical thinking and problem solving skills in the field of environmental health management.
