Description

This unit focuses on the role that leadership and advocacy skills play in achieving public health goals. Contemporary views about effective leadership and advocacy are examined with an emphasis on public health services and issues. Methods for establishing organisational cultures that support high ethical standards and a commitment to development and excellence are also analysed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Appraise the effectiveness of different approaches to contract negotiation within health services.
  2. Appraise the elements of effective team building, negotiation, conflict and performance management.
  3. Critically discuss methods of establishing organisational cultures that sustain high ethical standards and a commitment to development and excellence.
  4. Critically discuss strategies and methods for collaboration and partnership between organisations to achieve health goals.
  5. Critically discuss the motivation to work, role theory, and power and influence in organisations.
  6. Interpret the attributes of leadership and effective advocacy in health organisations and on health issues and to effect change.
  7. Interpret the benefits of articulating an achievable mission, core values and organisational vision in guiding action within public health organisations.
