Description

This unit provides an introduction to authoring World Wide Web pages. The unit includes: an introduction to WWW authoring tools and techniques; developing WWW pages and WWW sites; file organisation and management; standards for web tools and accessibility including W3C standards; incorporating graphics and digital media into WWW pages; developing Web-based graphics and temporal media; and design and development strategies for interactive Web-based information systems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create interactive web sites that incorporate graphics and digital media using Web authoring tools.
  2. Describe and implement web designs that cater for cross-cultural and international users.
  3. Discuss and demonstrate some of the web design tradeoffs/issues associated with usability and accessibility.
  4. Plan, design and build web pages using HTML and CSS.
  5. Rationalise and communicate web site development.
  6. Review and implement HTML, CSS, and DOM standards as promulgated by W3C.

  2. Planning and articulation of web design.
  3. Principles of Web design.
  4. The architecture of the Web.
  5. The characteristics and the uses of multimedia file types.
  6. The history of the Internet.
  7. The role of W3C, HTML and other standards.
  8. The usability and accessibility of web sites.
  9. Web coding using HTML and CSS.
