Description

We are in a global business village where different national markets merge into one global marketplace. Despite the rapid globalisation of markets, each market still differs from the rest in certain ways. Whether working in a multinational, domestic, international or private business it is inevitable that you will work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. This unit introduces the student to the different cultural dimensions of people and business and provides a framework that illustrates how different dimensions differentiate one culture from another. When these dimensions are applied to issues that affect the workplace such as communication, negotiation, language, business ettiquette, social customs and so forth, we develop an understanding of why people behave as they do and how this affects business.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop strategies to address issues arising from cultural differences within an International Business.
  2. Apply cultural theories and frameworks to act legitimately within contemporary business contexts.
  3. Assess cultural dimensions with regards to issues that affect the workplace such as communication, negotiation, language, business etiquette and social customs.

Unit Content

  1. Business etiquette and social customs.
  2. The intricacies, barriers and competence in intercultural communication.
  3. The role of contextual language differences in cross-cultural management.
  4. Different frameworks for differentiating national culture in a business setting.
  5. Globalisation convergence vs. divergence.
