Description

This unit is the second in a sequence of four Professional Learning experiences in which students engage with the early childhood context. Students will use the Australian Curriculum, The National Quality Standard, The Early Years Learning Framework, and supporting documents to plan for learning and teaching. Students will collect, analyse and use evidence about children's learning to plan, implement and evaluate learning experiences. In addition to course work, students undertake a professional placement in a Kindergarten or Pre-primary setting which comprises a four week block placement which will provide an opportunity to connect theory with practice under the guidance of experienced professionals. Students will investigate a range of theories and curriculum approaches and methods for engaging, motivating and teaching children in their learning. Designated unit: This professional experience unit is deemed to be a fundamental course requirement and may only be attempted once unless otherwise determined by the Progression Panel. Failure to pass these units may result in exclusion from the course. Exceptional Circumstances: Assistant Teachers can be withdrawn from their Professional Experience at the request of the host school Principal /Early Learning Centre Director or at the discretion of the Associate Dean (Early Childhood Education). This will result in a Fail grade for the professional experience which can also result in exclusion from the course by the Progression Panel.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Generally, host Schools and Centres require that the Pre-Service Teachers attend the professional experience on a full-time basis and otherwise meet their specific attendance requirements of the particular placement. There is limited scope for ECU to negotiate any deviations from these requirements.

Students must have passed ECS1240, IPP1260, LAN1375, ECS1245 and ECM2260 to enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply a reflective teaching process to work place learning experiences.
  2. Apply pertinent curriculum frameworks and supporting documents to the planning and assessment of learning experiences for children 3-6 years.
  3. Demonstrate a range of strategies for motivating, teaching and engaging young children in their learning.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding that teaching and learning is an act of inquiry.
  5. Describe the characteristics of quality programs for children 3 - 6 years.
  6. Examine the use of an e-portfolio as a tool for ongoing reflective practice.
  7. Meet the requirements of the Professional Practice.
  8. Plan and implement sequential learning experiences in a kindergarten / pre-primary context based on the assessment and evaluation of childrens learning, interests and previous experiences.

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

Additional Learning Experience Information

This may include: Lectures, tutorials (including online learning experiences for off campus students and school visits for on-campus students) and workplace integrated learning in an early childhood settings is an integral part of this unit. The Department of Education Western Australia and cooperating non-government schools/centres have the right to determine "fit and proper persons" to enter and practise in schools/centres. For these reasons, all Pre-Service Teachers 18 years of age and over will be required to have a current Department of Education National Criminally Coordinated Police History Check (NCCPHC) and a current Working with Children Check, or the equivalent clearance issued by the relevant State authority before commencing this period of Professional Practice. The host School/Centre has absolute discretion to terminate the Pre-Service Teacher’s placement prior to completion of the placement. Situations where this discretion has been exercised are typically where the School/Centre has had concerns about Pre-Service Teacher’s conduct or performance. ECU may also withdraw a Pre-Service teacher from a placement in certain circumstances. Early termination or withdrawl from the professional experience placement may result in a Fail grade for this unit.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
