Description

This unit provides a general introduction to theory and techniques of organising information resources for retrieval. Specific techniques examined include descriptive cataloguing and subject analysis, particularly the use of classification schemes and subject headings lists. The roles of bibliographic utilities and metadata schema will also be considered.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply the Resource Description and Access (RDA) framework and related tools to a metadata creation task.
  2. Create basic metadata, such as bibliographic description, subject analysis, and allocation of classification numbers using standards relevant to libraries and information organisations.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to apply these principles in a specific environment.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the nature and purposes of metadata schema devised to describe information sources and their use.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of metadata workflows in an information organisation.
