Description

Intermediate study of the Japanese language for communication purposes by exposure to a large variety of aspects of Japanese culture.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply basic mathematical competence.
  2. Demonstrate a good general understanding of Japanese culture.
  3. Have a sufficient understanding of the Japanese language to be able to communicate with native speakers in some areas of everyday life with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
  4. Read graded texts in hiragana, katakana and kanji with sound comprehension.
  5. Recognise and show development of skill in the writing and correct use of about 200 kanji.
  6. Use the Japanese language with a level of skill equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - Level A1 -> A2 for Understanding (Listening, Reading), Speaking (Interaction + Production), Writing.
  7. Write in kana and kanji on essential areas of everyday life, using increasing vocabulary with sound grammar and sentence structure.

Unit Content

  1. Aspects of Japanese culture.
  2. Continued use of graded texts and kanji quizzes and flash cards, as well as increasing exposure to real printed materials from everyday life (tickets, menus, signs, etc.), newspapers, magazines, sound and video recordings, films, T.V. programmes, etc to cover:
  3. Intermediate level vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures.
  4. New kanji.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit is taught by seminar, using: Multimedia resources including audio/interactive CDs and DVDs; Interaction with peers through group and pair work; Oral and written comprehension exercises, analysis of simple oral and written Japanese; and Picture and kanji flash cards and realia.
