Description

Utilising theme-based and task-based approaches, this Japanese language unit aims at developing the four language skills in an integrated way within the context of Japanese Arts. This unit focuses on Japanese fables, fairy-tales, memoirs and contemporary short fiction to develop students' understanding of Japanese culture, society and language. Students will be asked to respond to the texts from a personal and emotional viewpoint as well as analyse them for content and meaning.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from JLS2204

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Comprehend written and spoken texts on a wide variety of topics on the theme of the Arts in Japan and Australia.
  2. Expand their use of kanji by an additional 80 characters that relate to the theme of the Arts.
  3. Express themselves using specialised vocabulary pertaining to the theme of the Arts.
  4. Use a range of analytical and critical skills when evaluating concepts in the Arts.
  5. Use the Japanese language with a level of skill equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Level B1+ to B2 for understanding (listening and reading), speaking (interaction and production), and writing.

Unit Content

  1. Affective responses to Japanese literature.
  2. Contemporary fiction.
  3. Literature forms such as otogibanashi and mukashibanashi.
  4. Representation of Japanese culture and society in the Arts.
  5. Specialised vocabulary, grammar and structure in the Arts.
  6. Variations between written and oral Japanese in the Arts.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Seminar - speaking/listening/reading/writing practice. Group work: project-based.
