Description

This unit investigates the foundational nature of spoken language to literacy teaching and learning with an emphasis on both theoretical and practical aspects of language development. It analyses the theories, knowledge, skills, concepts and understandings significant for teaching listening and speaking and essential early reading skills.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Research and apply theories of language learning which inform effective literacy teaching.
  2. Plan, design and evaluate effective language learning experiences based on research evidence and theory.
  3. Examine and evaluate effective strategies to develop oral language skills including through the use of children's literature.
  4. Analyse and apply research-informed strategies to support and assess children’s development of listening and speaking for a range of audiences, purposes and contexts.
  5. Apply knowledge of the teaching, learning and assessment of vocabulary and phonemic awareness.

  1. Introduction to literacy teaching practices, skills and strategies for oral language, reading, writing and viewing.
  2. Theories of language learning and development, contemporary research and current issues.
  3. Theory and practice related to spoken language learning and use, including how it supports other learning.
  4. Effective teaching and assessment of Oral language
  5. Effective teaching and assessment of Vocabulary
  6. Introduction to Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
