Description

This unit focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to design and facilitate effective language learning opportunities. It develops materials and assessment evaluation and design skills and course planning skills. Students will develop the knowledge, skills and strategies to teach and assess the four language macro-skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) to adult and child language learners in a range of contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate and apply language learning and teaching approaches and strategies to develop the language macro skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) of adult and child language learners in a range of contexts.
  2. Apply established and emerging principles of language teaching and learning to the evaluation and design of teaching, learning and assessment materials.
  3. Critically evaluate the suitability of established and emerging language teaching approaches and techniques for adult and child language learning contexts.
  4. Design and justify a language learning course for a specified group of learners aligned to established or emerging language teaching approaches.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
