Description

This unit focusses on the principles and approaches of second language teaching and learning. It develops language teaching knowledge, techniques and lesson planning skills. You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, identify and address the language learning needs of adult and child language learners in a range of contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate and apply language teaching theories, research, principles, and approaches to plan and design learning opportunities for adult and child learners at a range of levels of proficiency.
  2. Critically analyse the needs of language learners considering the different factors affecting second language acquisition including age and proficiency.
  3. Synthesise practical knowledge and understanding of language learning theories and approaches via needs analysis, and lesson planning.
  4. Apply and justify lesson planning approaches and teaching strategies to meet the needs of adult and child learners at a range of levels of proficiency.

Learning is mediated via interactive student-centered learning activities with lecturer guidance and input as needed. The unit will provide regular opportunities for the sharing of knowledge, experiences and reflection on practice.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
